The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now available. Households and small businesses may be eligible for around a 30% discount on the upfront cost of installing a small-scale solar battery. The discount will be based on the solar battery’s usable capacity and will gradually decrease until 2030.

From 1 July 2025 homeowners and small businesses in Tasmania and across Australia may be eligible for around a 30% discount on the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery system (used with new or existing rooftop solar). The program is delivered through the federal government’s Small‑scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Eligible battery systems must have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, must be new (or added capacity to an existing system that hasn’t already claimed) and be installed with a solar PV system on the same premises.
In Tasmania there is currently no separate state-level battery rebate, so this federal scheme represents the primary upfront support for battery installations.
Yes, but with caveats. The federal battery discount (via the Cheaper Home Batteries Program) is in addition to the solar rebate you may receive under the STC scheme for your solar PV system.
However, because Tasmania has no separate state battery rebate, your stacking options are: federal solar STCs + federal battery discount. The state scheme instead offers an interest-free loan for energy-efficient upgrades (including batteries) via the Energy Saver Loan Scheme (up to $10,000) rather than a direct rebate.
It’s important to make sure your installer and product comply with both federal rules (battery must be approved, properly installed, meeting the cut-off dates) and check if any state programs have rules about stacking.
To be eligible under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program:
- You must install the battery system on or after 1 July 2025 (the date counts when the certificate of electrical compliance is issued).
- The battery must be new, have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, and the usable capacity is factored into the rebate calculation.
- It must be installed with a new or existing rooftop solar PV system at the same property (solely grid-storage batteries are not eligible).
- Your installer must be accredited, the battery must appear on the approved product lists (via the Clean Energy Council or equivalent), and all electrical and safety regulations in Tasmania must be met.
